Gao Daoming's native place and date of birth and death are unknown. The "Brief History of Taoism in Wudang" quotes the "Stele of the Establishment and Repair Record of Zhenqing Palace" from the Yuan Dynasty, which records that Gao was a disciple of Zhang Shouqing. Since childhood, he had longed to enter the Taoist world of Wudang. Later, he fulfilled his wish and studied under Zhang Shouqing in Wudang, "diligently serving the teachings with tireless dedication." At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, following Zhang Shouqing, he served as the director of the Datian-Zhenqing Wanshou Palace (now the Nan Yan Palace). He completed the unfinished work of his teacher in building the palace and promoting the religion, and conferred the title of Master Qingwei Yanqing Xuandao.
