Hui 'an, according to the "Brief History of Taoism in Wudang", was a renowned monk during the Sui and Tang Dynasties (582-709 AD), and was from Zhijiang, Hubei Province. During the great cause of the Sui Dynasty, he provided financial assistance to the poor. When Emperor Yang of Sui heard of his arrival, he summoned him to the capital. He avoided seeing him and thus hid in the Taihe Mountains. According to the "Ancient Records", Hui 'an lived in the Yu Gong Rock on Wudang Mountain (later named Yu Xu Rock, about five li upstream of the Jianhe Bridge on today's Wudang Mountain), reciting the Lotus Sutra. There was an old man in white who called himself Yu Gong and came to listen to him recite the sutra many times. Later it was said: I am a deity of the eastern sea. Due to violating the heavenly laws, 谪居 is here. As the period has expired, I will return soon. I wish to offer this place to you, this benevolent person, for your residence. According to the history, Wudang Mountain has been home to both Buddhism and Taoism since ancient times. Later, Taoism flourished and Buddhism came second. For this reason, there are very few records of immortals and Buddhist figures in the mountain Chronicles of past dynasties, which is truly a pity.
