There are various accounts of Yan Ji. The Ming Dynasty's "Great Mountain Taihe Mountain Annals" referred to the surname as Ye, while the Qing Dynasty's "Great Mountain Taihe Mountain Annals" referred to it as Yan. The "Daoxue Zhuan" also referred to the surname as Yan. Ge Hong's "Biographies of Immortals" and Tao Hongjing's "True Edict" hold that Yan Ji was Dai Meng. According to the "Great Mountain Taihe Mountain Annals" of Wudang Mountain throughout history, Yan Ji, styled Zhongwei, was a person during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty (58-76 AD). In his youth, he was obsessed with Taoist arts. After growing up, he held an official position but later resigned and retired to seclusion, devoting himself wholeheartedly to the study of Taoism. Later, he retired to Wudang Mountain. Yan Ji practiced a special kind of sleeping art on Wudang Mountain. Sometimes he lay on the perilous rock top, and sometimes beneath the ancient pines and cypresses, sleeping for years on end. But the clothes he wore never grew old or tattered due to the sun and night exposure from long sleep. Sometimes he had his hair loose, and sometimes he wore a hat. If I don't walk, I'll do. But when I do, I walk as swiftly and nimbly as a bird. He has a strange temperament and never allows anyone to get close to him. Whenever someone tries to approach him, he will quickly leave, making it impossible for anyone to track him. The details of his funeral are unknown.
