Ma Mingsheng, whose given name was Junxian and pseudonym was Mingsheng. It is said that his original surname was He and his courtesy name was Junxian. He was from Linzi (now in the north of Linzi, northeast of Zibo City, Shandong Province). It is said that when Ma Mingsheng was a teenager, he was once injured by a thief on the road and his life was in danger. Just then, he was brought back to life by a divine being who had administered medicine. Later, he left home to study Taoism and became a student of Mr. An Qisheng. An Qisheng was a deity in Taoist legends, a native of Langya (now in the southwest of Jiaonan County, Shandong Province). Due to his exceptionally long lifespan, he was known as the "Thousand-Year-old Man". He often sold medicine by the East Sea and had a relationship with Emperor Qin Shi Huang. After taking Ma Mingsheng as his disciple, he passed on the "Tai Qing Jin Ye Dan Jing" to Ma Mingsheng. Ma Mingsheng later found Wudang Mountain and obtained the secret technique of burning the external elixir of the "Sun God Pill". He then burned it together with his wife on Wudang Mountain. After the Sun God Pill was refined, he first took half a dose and became an immortal earth immortal, traveling around the world with his disciples for over five hundred years across the nine continents. After taking another half a dose, he ascended to immortality in broad daylight.
