Hongjing read extensively throughout his life, and the books he read exceeded ten thousand volumes. One of his purposes for traveling far and wide was to search for books. He was once ashamed of not knowing something. He is erudite and versatile, especially familiar with the Five Elements and Yin-Yang, wind Angle and climate, Taiyi Dunjia, astrology and numerology, mountains and rivers, geography, square and circle products, medical prescriptions and medicines, insects, birds, plants and trees, examination and school names and categories, and various divination techniques. To be so erudite is the best guarantee to keep one's mind vigorous until old age. Hongjing was also skilled in calligraphy, having mastered both ancient and modern styles. His clerical script did not follow the conventional form but created a unique style, as vigorous and charming as his own. He is proficient in all aspects of music, chess, horseback riding and archery. In his later years, he did not engage in horseback riding or archery. All he enjoyed was listening to the flute. Hongjing was particularly fond of the pine breeze throughout his life. Wherever he lived, he would plant pine trees by hand. Every time he heard their sound, he would be delighted. Therefore, in his memorial of resignation, it was stated: "A friend of the divine and the pine", which is a characteristic portrayal of his entire life. Hongjing was versatile and accomplished, yet he was tactful, modest and prudent. He was adept at navigating the underworld, with a heart as clear as a mirror. When encountering things, he was at ease, his words were free from distress, and others were naturally aware of it. Although he originally did not wish to interact much with the outside world, because of his gentle and clear appearance rather than his strict and resolute demeanor, both adults and children were delighted and convinced when they saw him. He is good at harmonizing the seven emotions, seldom worries or sorrows, has no jealousy, is indifferent to joy and sorrow, and keeps his emotions in check. I do not engage in any worldly tricks or proverbs. His steps are graceful and light, and he exudes the air of clouds and rosy clouds. Sometimes he wanders alone in springs and rocks. Anyone who sees him thinks he is an immortal.
