The Great Emperor Zhenwu is a revered deity in Taoism derived from the ancient astrological concept of "Xuanwu". In the Western Han Dynasty, there was already an image of turtles and snakes entwined. The process of personification began in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and finally formed the image of having loose hair 跣足 and walking on the feet of turtles and snakes, and gradually evolved into a great deity among Taoist deities. At the end of the 10th century AD, Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty changed the name of Xuanwu to Zhenwu, a name that has been used up to now. Emperor Chengzong of the Yuan Dynasty bestowed upon him the title of "Xuantian Yuansheng Renwei God". Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty determined the title of the True Martial God as "The God of True Martial in Wudang". Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty bestowed upon him the title of "Tianzhen Wuxuan Tian Di Shen of Beiji Town". During the Qing Dynasty, he was honored with titles such as "The True Martial Ancestor of Beiji Town, the Master of All Laws, the Benevolent and Powerful God of the Primordial Heaven and the Primordial Sage, the Incarnation of the Golden Gate, and the Celestial Lord of the Demon Slaying", among others.
