Episode 37 of "Eight Hundred Li of Wudang" : Hermit Rock
2026-05-25 10:21:44
The term "hermit" is often simplified to a superficial interpretation of "recluse". During the Six Dynasties period, people's pursuit of individuality and freedom led to a sudden transformation of the connotation and style of the "hermit" into the way of "longevity, long-term vision, ease and joy, and immortality". The "Southern History: Seclusion" states: "A hermit must cultivate a pure and upright character and engage in literary and artistic pursuits." The I Ching says, "When heaven and earth are closed, the virtuous man hides away." At this point, those wise men who are renowned yet indifferent can be called "hermits".
Deep in the thick forest at 32° north latitude, the Immortal Peak and the Hermit Peak stand across the clouds, outlining the most mysterious and mysterious hermit's secret realm in the 800-mile-long Wudang. From the Eastern Han Dynasty when Yin GUI was in charge of Du Yang Palace affairs to the Southern Qi Dynasty when Liu Qiu lived in seclusion in the rock cave, the thousand-year-old tradition of seclusion has continued in this strange land where subtropical and temperate vegetation interweave. The gnarled ginkgo trees bear the vicissitudes of history, and the white flowers of the davidia involucrata and the alpine rhododendrons are for the first time tinted in the clouds and mist, just like the tacit understanding between the recluse's way of "nourishing the nature through food" and heaven and earth.
A thousand meters away from the sheer cliff lies the mute village, with honeycomb-like small holes scattered all over the rock face like stars. The four seasons and the solar terms, the mountain wind penetrates the caves to form a rhythm, bringing the ancient mysterious sounds directly to the Hermit Rock. Inside the rock, charcoal marks from the three-burner stove still remain, thirty-seven square column bases are lined up, and an 800-square-meter wooden hall stretches across. The texture is mutually verified with the "Great Mountain Taihe Mountain Annals" : this is the ancient Taoist site where Yin GUI stored medicine to help the people and Liu Qiu transformed from a cocoon to a butterfly.
When the morning mist of the east pierces through the eaves of the ancient streets in Guanshan Town, Danjiangkou City, the "benches" at the ruins of Du Yang Palace conceal the life wisdom of the "hermits" of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Standing still on the peak of Xianren Peak, one can overlook the coexistence of Taxus chinensis and thousand-year-old polygonatum cypress, as well as the interdependence of orchids and seven-leaf one-branch flowers in the crevices of the rocks. The vanished wooden beam between the crevices, the receding figure, and the growing grass... Finally, in the clear sound of 罡风 brushing the stone, the ultimate harmony of harmony between man and heaven is achieved.
