Lingying Rock, also known as Wulong Rock, was the place where the governor of Junzhou in the Tang Dynasty was ordered to pray for rain. It is said that from then on until the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, praying for rain was very effective. To this day, there is a well-preserved stone hall in the rock, and behind the hall, on the rock wall, there is a spring that drips all year round. According to the Records of the Grand Historian, during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, there was a severe drought throughout the country. Yao Jian, the governor of Junzhou, came here to pray for rain. As expected, it rained heavily throughout the land. Emperor Taizong of Tang thus issued an edict to build the Five Dragons Shrine on Wudang Mountain, thus kicking off the imperial family's construction of temples on Wudang Mountain. From this perspective, Lingying Rock has indeed made significant contributions to the development history of Taoism on Wudang Mountain. According to folk tales, there are two ways to pray for rain here: one is called "literary prayer" and the other is called "military prayer". Wenqi is a way of praying and making a wish. In this way, the rain that falls will be fine and gentle. Wu Qi would either shoot a gun or pour dirty things into the cave. As a result, the rain would be extremely violent, often pouring down in torrents.
