The chime, an ancient musical instrument, is usually carved from stone or jade. Later, it was borrowed by Buddhist temples as a percussion instrument to gather the monks. It later evolved into a copper bowl shape and became an important ritual object in Taoism. It is usually placed in front of the deities in the hall, and its main purpose is to communicate with the gods and exorcise evil spirits. There are many copper and iron chimes remaining on Wudang Mountain. Besides those made by the imperial family, a large part of them were donated by folk believers. Among the nine virtues advocated in the Taoist Sutra of Karmic Retribution and Causes and Conditions, donating bells and chimes is one. Because the chime is inexpensive, can be cast with inscriptions and can be placed in the hall, believers who come to pay homage to the mountains are all willing to offer it.
