The flag bearer, also known as the Heavenly Firmament, is the subordinate deity of the Great Emperor Zhenwu, standing beside Zhenwu with a large flag. There are many bronze statues of flag-bearers remaining on Wudang Mountain, most of which were made by the imperial court during the Ming Dynasty. In the legend of Wudang, the flag-bearer was called Shan Zhiqi, who was the maternal uncle of Zhenwu and a fierce general. Shan Zhiqi was dissatisfied with Zhenwu's cultivation on Wudang Mountain. He made a bet and swore, "If you can achieve the Great Way, I will hold the flag for you." After Zhenwu achieved enlightenment and became a great god, he had no choice but to hold the flag for him.
