As the saying goes, "You can rest easy," but from the perspective of medical physiology and pathology, this statement is completely wrong! In clinical practice, many patients with cervical spondylosis who experience dizziness, strong pain in the neck, soreness and swelling in the shoulders and arms, and numbness in the limbs and joints mostly have the habit of sleeping on high pillows. Under normal circumstances, people have sharp hearing and vision, their limbs are stretched out, and their necks can look left and right, bend forward and backward. This is the result of the flexibility of the neck, the perfect coordination and unity of the cervical vertebrae and numerous ligaments, tendons, muscle membranes and muscles. However, those patients with cervical spondylosis who use high pillows to hope for peace of mind only seek temporary comfort and keep using high pillows year after year. As a result, the normal forward physiological curvature of the cervical vertebrae becomes straight, disappears, and even protrudes backward, presenting an inverted tension deformity. The balance between the cervical vertebrae becomes unstable, leading to the growth of bone spurs and putting many ligaments, tendons, muscle sheaths, and muscles in this tense state of high pillows. One cannot get the necessary relaxation and rest. Over time, calcification of the anterior and posterior ligaments and the cervical ligaments, as well as ossification of the neck muscles, gradually formed. The metabolism of blood vessels and nerves in the corresponding areas also becomes impaired. As a result, the neck becomes stiff and straight, and movement is severely restricted. Various types of neck disease symptoms occur one after another, causing great trouble for work and study. Since a high pillow is not good for health, can we just not use a pillow at all? Not using a pillow is also bad for health. Without a pillow, when people lie down and lean back too much, the muscles and skin in the front of the neck become tense, which will press on the trachea, making it easy to have nightmares, breathe through the mouth, and then cause symptoms such as dry mouth, dry tongue, sore throat and snoring. If one lies on their side without a pillow, the muscles on one side of the neck may also become overly stretched and fatigued, causing spasms, pain, and restricted movement, resulting in a "stiff neck". Therefore, whether a pillow is too high or too low is not conducive to health care and must be corrected. Modern medical research shows that the height of a normal pillow is generally determined by the distance from the ear to the shoulder when a person is lying on their side. The vertical height of the head resting on the pillow is best for adults at 6 to 9 centimeters, and for children, it should be lower. Chinese medical experts have always advocated that people use round pillows because they are very in line with the natural physiological curve of the cervical vertebrae. Place a round pillow on your neck, lie on your back, and keep your head in a backward position. This can fully relieve the strain on the muscles and ligaments at the back of the neck, provide a neck support and mild traction, reduce the pressure on the nerves caused by bone hyperplasia, and prevent cervical spondylosis. For adults, a round pillow with a diameter of 15 centimeters and a length of 33 centimeters is generally appropriate.
