The essential core techniques of Jeet Kune Do

(1) The two-point punch and eight-point kick kicks are complete and core components of the Jeet Kune Do system. Bruce Lee referred to leg techniques as the "most effective offensive and defensive weapon", with their application accounting for as high as 80%, which is also the most distinctive feature of Jeet Kune Do. Bruce Lee believed that among the four limbs of the human body, the strength of the legs is far superior to that of the hands. Therefore, Jeet Kune Do places great emphasis on leg techniques and is renowned in the martial arts world for its rich, diverse, vigorous and sharp leg techniques. It is widely recognized as the king of the king of the world's leg strike schools and is also hailed as the art of kicking. (2) Speed First Jeet Kune Do is renowned for its rapid and fierce, resolute and sharp, and whirlwind fast attacks. "Speed" is the fundamental to winning in combat. Only by being fast can one catch the opponent off guard and attack them when they are unprepared. Speed, strength and accuracy are the three key elements of Jeet Kune Do combat. Jeet Kune Do emphasizes "speed is the key" and "quick, short and fast" : short, crisp and decisive force application, unity of upper and lower limbs, and swift and crisp movements. At the moment of force application, the waist and limbs are used to exert force at an extremely fast speed, striking the opponent and creating a lightning-fast strike effect. Speed is a comprehensive ability, including "recognition time" and "reaction time". The key does not lie in the speed of action, but in reaching the target as quickly as possible. Five major categories of speed: 1. Visual speed 2. Reaction Speed 3. Attack Speed 4. 5. Speed Change ### Six key elements for Increasing Speed 1. Warm up thoroughly to reduce muscle resistance, enhance elasticity and flexibility, and adapt to high-intensity exercise conditions; 2. The muscles should be moderately loose and tight in harmony. 3. Highly concentrated and fully concentrated spirit; 4. Develop a sharp visual habit and master the ability to react quickly in an instant. 5. Rich imagination and on-the-spot insight; 6. Coordinated and mobile movements, flexible body techniques, directly and indirectly increase speed and efficiency. (3) The power of combat strikes in Jeet Kune Do does not rely on brute force. Many martial artists with underdeveloped muscles can instantly gather energy and force and deliver heavy blows. On the contrary, some muscular people find it difficult to knock down their opponents. True destructive power does not lie in the brute force of muscle contractions, but in the instantaneous explosive force, which depends on the speed of the movements of the hands, feet and legs. Bruce Lee weighed only over fifty kilograms, yet he was able to defeat opponents who were much heavier than himself. The secret was: "Concentrate your strength on one point and exert it in an instant." There are numerous ways to apply force in Jeet Kune Do, but essentially they can be divided into two types: short force and long force, which are distinguished by the duration and effect of the force acting on the opponent. 1. Short force Short force belongs to extremely fast elastic force, just like a compressed spring suddenly breaking. The time taken before and after the force is exerted is extremely short and the speed is extremely fast. It can generate powerful oscillation and penetration, penetrating through the tendons and nerves, causing the opponent to panic and lose consciousness, laying the groundwork for subsequent long and powerful consecutive strikes. In actual combat, Bruce Lee mainly promoted the "short force start", and the external manifestation of short force is the "instant explosive power". 2. "Long strength" means "overall strength". With the waist, legs, hips and shoulders as the power sources, the entire body is connected in sections, and the force is transmitted from bottom to top or from top to bottom in a natural way. The force exerted is long and substantial, thus it is called Changjin. ## (4) Invincible as if with an Enemy, with an enemy as if Invincible ### Invincible as If with an Enemy When practicing alone on a daily basis, always imagine a real opponent facing off and fighting in front of you. Fully apply the techniques you have learned, and in the simulated actual combat, thoroughly understand the principles of the boxing and refine your instincts. Feeling invincible when facing an enemy does not mean underestimating or being arrogant; rather, it is a core strategic principle of Jeet Kune Do. To defeat an opponent, one must first show strategic contempt and psychological suppression, and gain the upper hand in terms of momentum and mindset. (5) Seizing the Right Moment In combat, speed and the judgment of timing complement each other. Accurately grasping the right moment to strike is the key to victory. There are five types of actual combat opportunities in Jeet Kune Do: 1. When the attack is determined by one's own will and the mind is highly focused, strike decisively and the success rate is the highest; 2. At the moment when the opponent is about to make a move or attack, take the opportunity to launch a counterattack and deliver a fatal blow or a series of consecutive strikes. 3. When the opponent's move is in the middle and the old force has not yet dissipated while the new force has not yet emerged, take the opportunity to launch a surprise attack. 4. When the opponent's attack fails and their move is withdrawn, take advantage of the situation to counterattack. When the opponent is lax in defense, mentally dispersed and physically exhausted, take the opportunity to launch a fierce attack. The chances of winning are extremely high. (6) The Waist is the master, and the waist and the horse are integrated. The waist is the largest hub in the range of motion of the human trunk, connecting the upper and lower limbs, and controlling the transmission of movement throughout the body, the turnover of force, and the balance of the figure. All the punches and kicks in Jeet Kune Do are driven by the twisting and stretching of the waist to move the limbs. The path of force application: Force starts from the feet, gathers in the waist, is transmitted to the shoulders and elbows, and reaches the hands and feet. It runs through the hips and knees and lands on the legs and feet. Circular path: Feet → Waist → shoulders → elbows → hands and feet → Hips → knees → feet. With the waist as the core, coordinate and unify the entire body to achieve the best force application effect. There is a saying in boxing: "Before you can punch or kick, first twist your waist and hips." (7) Seeking Balance in Motion Balance refers to the ability of the human body to maintain a relatively stable center of gravity in the air. Bruce Lee emphasized: Balance is the ability to always control the center of gravity of the body. The legs can be raised or lowered at will and can be freely coordinated with hand techniques, footwork and body movements. The core of effective balance: ** Be able to control and quickly restore the center of gravity in any posture **. Even if the body is tilted and out of balance, it can be instantly straightened and stabilized. Key points of practice 1. When moving, use more small steps and sliding steps, and avoid jumping steps and crossing steps. Change the center of gravity in real time according to the opponent's movements; 2. Control the range of motion by punching and kicking to avoid overdoing it and causing imbalance. 3. Deliberately train the body control under dynamic center of gravity changes, and develop standard balance postures and instinctive habits. (8) Good Sense of Distance In actual combat, both exquisite leg techniques and precise punches cannot do without the ability to judge distance. When attacking the target, one cannot merely focus on the opponent's current position; it is also necessary to predict their landing point after dodging or shifting. At the moment of attack, the distance between the opponent and oneself must be precisely controlled. When experts confront each other, the distance between the two sides changes dynamically at all times. A favorable position depends on one's own and the opponent's movement speed and agility. There are three practical combat distances in Jeet Kune Do. 1. ** Long distance ** : It is used to test the opponent's strength and test their weakness. When defending, it is also necessary to maintain a distance to avoid being placed close to the opponent and falling into a passive position. 2. ** Medium range ** : Both sides are within the range of attack and defense. Whoever seizes the opportunity first will take the initiative. 3. ** Close Range ** : In close combat, the first to strike is the winner. Block the opponent's front foot with your foot to restrict their movement and lifting, and then launch a fierce attack with a series of punches. Bruce Lee's signature move, "Hook Pass", was a combat technique specifically created for close combat.
