Great Compassion Fist

The Great Compassion Fist, as it has always been passed down orally and personally within the Buddhist community, has no written records. As far as is known, the "Illustrated Explanation of the Great Compassion Dharani Fist", which was dictated by Master Qi Yun (lay name Shi Zhenggang) in 1937, written by Li Ruicheng, and compiled with photos of practice by Master Yun 'an, a disciple of Master Qi Yun, is the earliest written record of this fist. In the 1960s, Master Qi Yun taught this martial art in Zhongshan Park. His disciples included Li Yumin, Xu Fengjun, Li Daozhong and others. Among those who taught the Great Compassion Boxing at the same time as Master Qi Yun was Sun Zhiyi from Xinhe County, Hebei Province. The two had similar boxing postures but different styles. The descendants of Sun Zhiyi are represented by the brothers Wang Guangzu and Gu Ming. Gu Ming passed on the message to Zhang Jingxian and others again. The Great Compassion Fist is based on the "Sutra of the Great Compassion Heart of the Thousand-Hand and Thousand-Eye Avalokitesvara" (referred to as the "Great Compassion Mantra") in Buddhism. It is compiled according to the 84 true words of the entire sutra (transliteration in Sanskrit), each of which features the posture and transformation of a guardian deity. Its content is mainly represented by the traditional 63 forms. There are newly compiled popular routines of 21 forms, competition routines of 42 forms, traditional routines adapted from 84 forms and 128 forms, as well as newly created contents such as "Great Compassion Skill" and "Great Compassion Sword". The Great Compassion Fist not only trains the body but also the mind, and training the mind is more important than training the body. While practicing boxing, one's mouth flows with true words and the mind visuals. Make a hand seal. The first 63 lines of the 84 mantras form 63 movements. After the boxing postures are completed, stand still and recite the remaining 11 lines in silence. The entire set of boxing is then concluded. One of the characteristics of this boxing style is that it is gentle yet firm, firm but not stiff, stretching the tendons and bones, with an inner circle and an outer square shape. Second, it is continuous, interlinked, with form and meaning following each other, gentle and relaxed. Third, it is graceful and elegant, dignified and graceful. Gu Ming, the current president of the Research Association of this Boxing style, was born in Penglai, Shandong Province in 1938. In 1972, he began to learn the Great Compassion Boxing from Sun Zhiyi and later studied Yang-style and Chen-style Tai Chi under Jiang Yufang. In 1974, he practiced the Great Compassion Fist and weapons again under Li Daozhong. In 1982, he/she won the second place in the Tai Chi Group (Great Compassion Quan) of the Beijing Workers' Wushu Invitational Competition. With the support of Teacher Sun Zhiyi, "42-Style Great Compassion Boxing" was written and broadcast on CCTV. In 1990, the Chinese Medical Audio-Visual Publishing House produced a teaching video of "Great Compassion Gong" and once co-organized a correspondence course on "Great Compassion Gong" with "Health Friend". He also went to Guangdong, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, Shandong and other places many times to spread his skills, doing certain work for the promotion of this boxing style.
