Therefore, they have abundant physical strength and energy, can enjoy a peaceful and long life, and live to be a hundred years old. Poison attacks evil, grains nourish, fruits assist, livestock benefit, and vegetables fill. When the scents are combined and taken, it can replenish essence and qi. The medicinal herbs are mainly used to attack pathogenic qi. It is advisable to use grains and cereals as basic nutrients, fruits as supplements, meat as tonics, and vegetables as fillers. Only by consuming a variety of foods in combination can the effect of tonifying essence and qi be achieved. The five flavors should be avoided: Pungent foods can expel qi, and people with qi disorders should not consume too much pungent food. Saltiness promotes blood circulation.
