Teacher Kong De: Hello! I take the liberty to write to disturb you, hoping that a few ridiculous questions can be corrected by you, so that the younger generation can recognize the right path when lost. I'm a freshman this year. More than two years ago, I practiced two methods: holding my breath and sitting in meditation. Now there is often a constant flow of qi in the abdomen, which sometimes rushes to the anus and makes one feel like discharging. If you hold back from defecating for several days without having a bowel movement, if you want to defecate, you need to release some gas. I often feel there is air in my throat. When I swallow it, I make a sound in my upper abdomen if I pay a little attention. Therefore, there is always air in my abdomen. It has been like this for two years. According to the Taoist scriptures, the outer three Jewels do not leak out, while the inner three Jewels remain stable. I don't know if this kind of qi loss is due to the disappearance of the Outer Three Jewels. I hope you can teach me how to stop this qi loss. For more than half a year, there has been a frequent pulsation of qi in my body, which has gradually become more frequent. The soles of the feet seemed to be bubbling up, while the rest of the body was just a fleeting movement, as if a bug had turned over. There are qi on the four feet, the sides, the face and the top of the head, but it is not felt that the qi has entered the dantian. When I was practicing holding my breath at that time, I often felt a tightness in my chest and a bulge in my abdomen. This was probably not standard, and both exercises were soon stopped. Looking back, I practiced like this at that time merely to relax my body and mind and improve my physical condition. However, I was not sincere enough and did not work hard enough, which led to poor results. Now I am in a difficult situation. After entering university, I often went to the ancient books reading room to read the Daozang. I was very interested in its profound knowledge, but no one guided me, which wasted a lot of time and left me with many doubts. Moreover, I was not physically strong and couldn't keep it up. Thinking of how much these questions would seem like a smile to you, yet they would take up your precious time, I am truly "trepidation" and dare not write much. I am waiting for your reply. Best regards! Teacher Kong De replied: The Taoist art of internal alchemy for health preservation requires a thorough understanding of the principles and methods before one can start practicing it. Strictly speaking, one still needs the guidance of a wise teacher. Otherwise, blind practice and blind cultivation will not only be of no benefit but may also lead to great harm. One must be cautious! Generally speaking, young people have better innate qualities. Even a slight posture or way of practicing martial arts will give them a sense of qi. But the initial qi from practicing martial arts was not the innate primordial energy, but the qi from breathing and the protective qi within the body. The sensation of qi in the circulatory systems of internal organs such as the chest and abdomen is mostly due to the effect of breathing qi within them. The sensation of qi in the skin on the body surface is due to the role of the protective qi within it. At the same time, the breath energy is also closely related to the protective energy. Knowing this, one can understand that the obstruction and rolling of air in the abdomen and throat are merely phenomena caused by improper use of breathing, far from reaching the level of the "Three Treasures". So at this point, if you need to burp, you should burp; if you need to pass gas, you should pass gas; if you need to defecate, you should defecate. Otherwise, holding it in will cause problems. When there is a reaction of defensive qi in the body, it is the defensive qi unblocking the meridians on the surface of the body. No matter whether it is in the feet, limbs, face or head, and no matter what it feels, do not pay attention to it. When one continues to practice and the meridians on the body surface become unobstructed, this feeling will disappear. Then, one can delve deeper into the cultivation of ying qi, Zong Qi and Yuan Qi. When one stops practicing martial arts, the defensive qi deteriorates and one does nothing. At this point, there is no feeling either. Given your current situation, you have no clear understanding of the principles and methods of Neidan health preservation. It is recommended that you stop all practices related to Qigong. In the next step, you can spend several years reading more books of this kind, visit friends and seek out teachers. Once you have a thorough understanding of the principles and methods in your heart, it's not too late to start practicing. At the same time, you can practice other dynamic exercises, such as Tai Chi, Baduanjin, and Wuqinxi. Best wishes in reply!
